The origin myths of Jakar Valley vary in their telling…
Some believe that the word Jakar is a derivation from Chakhar which means “Iron Castle,” an allusion to an ancient tower of iron from which the region was ruled in the 7th Century and earlier. The other, more romantic, notion is that Jakar comes from Bjakar, which means “Castle of the White Crane,” a reference to the Jakar Dzong, the beautiful white fortress which sits on a high knoll a short uphill hike from our resort.
Each year in the fall (dates vary from year to year), the courtyards of this 17th century monument resounds with the sound of clashing cymbals, deep horns and ancient Buddhsit drums celebrating in song, mask dances and theatrical performances the religious myths and exploits of Buddhist masters and miracle workers who made the region their home at varying points in their lives.
